  • The surprise hit from Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire

There are two things which are fundamentally wrong about how some of the Indian critics have been looking at this movie and it gives an interesting window on how they think.

Say I make a movie on the sports of Hockey in India, now if the movie becomes a hit and a darling of Sundance crowd in the western world - am I portraying that Hockey is the only sport that is played in India or by showcasing Hockey am I doing a disservice to other more deserving sports?

  • Why Are Your Dead More Important Than Mine?

The latest attacks in Gaza are as painful to watch as all the previous ones. I don't know if there is such a thing called Israel/Palestine conflict fatigue syndrome, because if it is then it is setting into me. Why is it that every time egoistic and power hungry people from these two over analyzed, over armed and over negotiated territories decide to fight, the world stops in its track - the top leaders make a beeline to the Middle Eastern capitals and fall over themselves to resolve the issue. That they have been all unsuccessful in last 60 years or so does not deter a single one of them.

  • Three Myths About Pakistan

Pakistan is a Islamic country : Every and any half-decent elections in Pakistan have proved otherwise. Religious parties have never won more than 15% of popular vote in a reasonably fair elections. Even with the help of Musharraf's widespread rigging the religious parties were not able to get a simple majority. That is not to say Islam does not exist, it does to the extent a religion exists in any developing country with its own prejudices and biases. However it doesn't mean that all Pakistanis are Islamic bigots. The North West Frontier, however, is another story where very orthodox flavor of Islam is preached due to variety of reasons. Then again, hash lands do not produce mellow cultures.

  • We have cease fire in Gaza: Now what?

Israel declared a unilateral cease fire in Gaza after 22 days of punishing strikes. Obviously both sides have claimed victory and at the same time have vowed to fight for their rights (whatever that means). Experts widely agree that Israel or some flavor of multi-national force would occupy the border corridor at Rafah crossing with Egypt (known as Philadelphi corridor) to curb the cross border smuggling of arms and to put an end on tunnel digging. The Israeli military will then have to release the pressure somewhere to compensate for the smuggling curb and start the flow of goods through normal

channels. Okay so far so good.

  • Mumbai Terror Attacks and the Response

In the wake of Mumbai terrorist attacks, there have been lot of opinions, suggestions and call of actions from different people across various walks of life in India and abroad.Broadly speaking I have tried to classify these ideas and people into three categories:

The Nationalist - They favor attack of some sort on Pakistan and take out the terrorist camps and their hideouts.

The Should Gang - They place the blame squarely on Indian government which in all its glory of corruption and inefficiency failed to place any protective measures despite numerous previous terror attacks in the country. The idea is that we should take lesson from this tragedy, should start to change the society one citizen at a time, should become more law abiding, should try to take more active part in government machinery to make it better.
